You must be wondered, in all my posts, I keep writing about sprouts to include in natural diets. Why is it most important to eat sprouts, every day? And, how sprouted grains differ from whole grains? It is scientifically proven fact that, in sprouts, nutrients are more by many times than whole grains nutrients.
Before going in depth about how to prepare sprouts, I will write, how sprouted grains differ from whole grains. Sprouted grains differ from whole grains in three aspects.
- 1) Sprouting activates food enzymes. Meat or eggs also have more proteins. But the difference is, to digest meat or eggs, our body has to produce its own enzymes, for which it consumes a lot of energy. But the sprouted grains has its own enzymes. The body doesn't need to produce them. Apart from this sprouts has all required nutrients in it like minerals, vitamins, proteins, carbohydrates and fats.
- 2)Sprouting increases vitamin content: As mentioned, sprouts has all required nutrients for our body.
- 3)Sprouting neutralises antinutrients like phytic acid which bind up minerals, preventing your ability to absorb them.
Grains To Be Used:
Sprouts can be prepared from green gram, black eyed beans, lentils, chick peas, sorghum(jonnalu), ragi grains(ragulu), millet grains. In India, ancient days sorghum, ragi, millet had been used by people frequently in their dishes. But nowadays, many of us not aware of these grains. While it takes few days to sprout grain, it's not as labour intensive of a process as it might seen. Daily two or three varieties of sprouts can be eaten. Of all the grains, use commonly green gram, chick pea and black eyed beans as it takes less time to sprout. Germination time varies from grain to grain. It is advisable to sprout normal grains than hybrid grains. Hybrid grains are big in size but less in nutrients. All grains and seeds can be sprouted following these basic instructions though the germination time varies from grain to grain.
HOW TO SPROUT GRAIN:
- 1) Start with cleaning grains, so that all pebbles and grains with poor appearance are removed adequately.
- 2)Rinse grains thoroughly, 3-4 times. Make sure they are washed properly. To cleanse it still more, we can dry the grains in sunlight. Though it's not possible in cold countries, in most of the countries people follow this practice as the sun light has power of evacuating the pesticides.
- 3)To prepare sprouts of two or more varieties, several cups can be used.
- 4)In the morning as soon as you get up, take some grains in the above mentioned, and soak it in water for whole day. Before go to bed, wash them neatly and thoroughly. If you are lving place is in extreme cold, you need to dry them whole night on any cotton cloth or on any tissue paper. So that all water on the grains can be absorbed by the cloth or paper. Moist on the grains may contaminate the grains. So that, we can make sure that, by next day the grains will be fresh without any smell. If your place is not in extreme temperatures, you can directly come to step 5, without drying them on paper.
- 5)By morning all the grains will be dried, now we can take one cotton cloth and tie all the grains inside the cloth tightly. By next day morning, we can see sprouts coming out of the cloth. In between, we can sprinkle some water on the cloth, if we feel it's dry. In case if you cannot tie in a cloth, if you are affordable you can buy a sprout maker.
Though its 2-day process, it does not have any labour intensive, its worth to have sprouted grains. Because sprouts are gaining its life from the dried grains. If we eat that sprouted grains which are getting its life, our health will be very lively all the time. Hence for pregnant women sprouts are preferable for a healthy baby.
