The amount of salt we consume has direct effect on our health. For healthy living we must reduce the consumption of salt. Salt and High blood pressure has direct relationship. More salt we eat, the higher our blood pressure. Apart from the blood pressure related issues, high consumption of salt causes other health damages like greater retention of water in body, which leads to weight gain, thinning of the bones (osteoporosis), asthma and kidney diseases.
The unknown fact here is sodium is available in all the natural foods available like vegetables, nuts, and lentils and grains. But since our taste buds got used to take more salt we don’t feel the taste of salt in these natural foods available. Once we reduce the salt intake our taste buds also get used to the levels of the salt taste. At this moment, if we eat more salty food we feel something unusual. Our body reactions depend on our food habits. Healthy food habits shows on our skin, blood pressure and weight maintenance. For example glowing skin is good indication of healthy lifestyle of a person. For unhealthy food habits, body reacts in the form of diseases. It’s always our choice to choose which food to eat and which food not to eat.
On the other hand, even the processed foods have the hidden sodium in it. Most people are completely unaware of these things. So before buying any processed foods, we must check the sodium content. Either we have to stop eating processed foods or we have to buy less salt content food.
The current recommendation is to consume 5-6 grams per day i.e., 1 tablespoon of salt. People suffering with high blood pressure, doctors suggest them to reduce salt intake. Recent research has also proved that less consumption of salt lower the blood pressure. Instead of salt add natural flavours like lemon, fresh herbs, onion, garlic, ginger, green chillies.
Hence, everyone reduce salt to not to get high blood pressure and who are already suffering should reduce still more salt intake to control the high blood pressure. Remember this is all for our healthy living. Taste is not important than life. Only initial days we may feel little difficulty to reduce salt, once taste buds gets used to it, we enjoy the real natural flavours.
